Founded in 2003, the Brazilian Vegetarian Society -SVB is a grassroots non-profit organization strategically positioned to drive structural change across government, education, health, and industry — promoting a transition toward a plant-forward food system in Brazil.
SVB advances the replacement of animal protein with plant-based alternatives at both individual and institutional levels through public education, the implementation of institutional meat-reduction programs, policy advocacy, strategic partnerships, and by raising awareness of the health and environmental benefits of plant-based diets. The organization works to shift food culture and national guidelines toward plant-based solutions.
SVB’s VISION is a country where vegan food is enjoyable, accessible, and convenient for every person and institution.
SVB’s MISSION is to promote the replacement of animal protein with plant protein, both individually and institutionally; expand and facilitate the access to plant-based products and services; and produce and promote reference information for professionals, institutions, opinion makers and the Brazilian society in general, about the principles, viability and health and environmental benefits of plant-based eating.

SVB’s institutional meat reduction program integrates plant-based meals in public and private institutions (e.g., schools, hospitals, solidarity kitchens) across Brazil through training, workshops, and menu support, directly reaching staff and beneficiaries while indirectly influencing families and communities.
This program has impacted over 500,000 people across 9 different cities in Brazil. Over 530 million plant-based meals have been served since this program started in 2009.
SVB contributes to policy development linking plant-based advocacy to climate commitments, and supporting initiatives on nutrition, food security, and public health.
Highlights: (i) Becoming a member of the National Council for Food and Nutritional Security (Consea), playing a key role in coordinating public policies on food security across all government levels; (ii) The Sustainable Municipal Menu initiative, which promotes public policies to ensure that at least one day per week, meals served in public institutions are based on plant-based foods—preferably sourced from local family farming. So far, the initiative has resulted in 14 plant-based meal bill proposals being officially submitted in cities across Brazil.
SVB’s movement-building work cultivates grassroots support and public visibility, creating the foundation needed for lasting systemic change by (i) empowering activists who are willing to transform food systems all over Brazil — a network of 700+ passionate volunteers and local groups in more than 50 cities working for a kinder world for animals; (ii) engaging in various public and professional events, from cultural gatherings to professional congresseses, educating and building visibility and credibility for plant-based solutions; (iii) training health professionals on plant-based nutrition.
SVB produces high-quality educational content on the nutritional, cultural, social and environmental aspects of a plant-based diet— including over 30 free e-books on topics such as environment, ethics, health, and recipes, as well as educational websites and hundreds of videos on social media.
Every contribution makes a difference. Join us and help accelerate the shift towards a more sustainable food system!
